Calendula (Kalendae)
Seeking the thread that animates us.
The Story
A moment imagined from the inner life of a flower.
This ending is stronger. It feels more mysterious and leaves the reader with the central question instead of explaining what the answer should be. The final line now echoes “What am I?” and lets the story remain open.
The progression is clear: awakening, uncertainty, loneliness, recognition, and curiosity. I would keep it as written.
A growing awareness stirred him awake.
He opened his eyes and wondered,
Where am I? What am I?
His surroundings felt vaguely familiar.
He found himself surrounded by flowers, yet none of them moved.
He noticed something beginning to sprout roots within him.
Loneliness.
He hurried from stem to stalk, hoping to find someone who might welcome his existence.
Then he heard a sound.
Kneeling beneath a bush, he peered into the night.
There, he sensed something familiar: movement, sound, life.
Should I follow it? he thought.
Like the Mystic, perhaps we are all searching for what truly animates us.
